wow this thing is bigger than i expected, pre orders on the ipad have sold out

you can stand in line at the apple store on april 3rd this saturday and you might be able to get one, but expect a big line

wow, not exactly iphone numbers but the ipad pre order day was a huge success.

apple took orders for 120,000 ipads in the first day of early pre order.

of course the big seller was the base 16gb model, followed by the high end 64gb model, 3g not a huge player to my amazement, 70 percent wifi only.

april 3rd they will be in the apple store.

simple solutions to a simple problem

1st and foremost

1. clean up your desktop: your desktop, you can have folders but try not to have to many images or documents on the actual desktop, this will only slow your start up time as your mac will have to redraw these images on startup.

2. dont have to many applications open:
depending on your ram memory this will dictate how many applications you can have open at one time, try to keep it under 5

3. clean out apps you dont use: go get an application called clean app, and take out old applications that may have background processes running you just dont need, try to avoid the urge to installling apps you wont use 2 weeks after you get them.

4. Safe boot: on start up right after the tone hold the “shift” key for 2 minutes and let the machine run into safe boot mode, it takes a minute but it will rebuild and clear out a lot of things, do once a month.

5. Disk Warrior: this is a disk you run at startup by pushing C at startup this is a great investment for rebuilding your computers directory

so today was the day, the monumental, ground breaking, revolutionary day for the itablet, my first impression…….mehhhhh

The device it self is better than any other tablet / e-book reader out by 100 miles, but i guess i have come to expect more from apple.

in short, it looked rushed, the keynote gave me the impression that everyone involved had to get it out and they did but they were less than happy about the results.

Negative right, lol, well the first thing i saw in the live blog off of gizmodo was “the bezel”, way to much bezel i mean jay leno bezel.

second, no camera / s, this device would have been awesome for running augmented reality app with the use of its compass but without the cameras the device is frozen in 3d.

third, i really dont like the fact that there is no os X 10.6 option, i am pretty sure it had to do with the A4 processor not being able to handle it, and that kept the price down but iam a power users and iam going to go thru this thing like butter in a goose, just does not have the head room for semi power users. No photoshop, no microsoft word.

fourth, because its a bastard iphone sdk (operating system), that means no multi tasking, no running 2 apps at the same time, thats not good.

finally i think the sudo gps is wonky you will basically have what they call assisted gps which more than likely means you’ll need the 3g version for acurate tri-triangulation.

lowball is 499, with wifi 629 with 3g late march and april releases

i think this will probably appeal to the joe 12 packs and people that want to keep it very very simple, but the headroom constraints are making me advise against.

well xmas is coming up and i know a lot of people are wondering which e reader should find its place under the douglas.

its an amazing time for technology and the kindle’s entry into the market while not the first (see the sony e reader), definitly set the bar pretty high.

being able to download books via wifi or 3g is pretty huge and amazon a we all know has a pretty decent collections of titles.

its got a couple other things going for it, not to mention a 70 percent market share, but the introduction of the upcoming nook with its touch abilities and partial color screen, kinda puts the kindle on it heels.

not to mention that barnes and noble stores are everywhere and browsing via there instore wifi means you can download books while enjoying a westside latte and of course you can actually go and play with them when they become available (late Nov) instead of taking a friends word for it.

they are both small light and fast, performing the one thing they do pretty well.

now. that being said i can tell you iam not a big fan of “one trick pony” devices, i like to get the most out of my hardware and so iam sorta waiting with baited breath for the apple tablet.

At this point its yet a rumor of course, but the rumor sites they are a buzzin. It sorta makes sense, there is quite a business model there, not only e books but dare i say it, all magazine and newspaper subscriptions.

I think its a natural trend, you have a push in electronics to become more eco friendly and sustainable and you have the magazine / newspaper industry barely eeking out an existance, its a marriage made in cyber space.

An apple tablet with 3g / wifi a 10 inch screen and flash SSD harddrive would change the way we think of portable media.

iam reminded of Stephen K Dicks novel / movie minority report where they were on the train and the “e-paper” was updating as the riders were reading. This seems like the progression and frankly i cant wait.

Newsprint / Paper is messy and wasteful not to mention toxic in the printing process, it the last analog step in an otherwise digital process. I say wait for the mac tablet heres why…

use cases are already written i am sure, but being a QA/Mac here are my 2cents, with a thin ultra portable device with the right screen resolution you could throw the tablet in your backpack for a full day of activities first stop coffee:

pulling out the device in a coffee bean with wireless internet you could check your email, IM friends, check your calendar for the day, and check the morning paper with embedded news feeds and customized news and weather for your offending zip code. Also being within the network you could be alerted to any promotions or what song is currently playing in the store, with a link to your itunes embedded, click buy smile.

next, in the car or on the bus, a gps unit would take care of all your navigating needs, alert you to your stop coming up or offer turn by turn navigation to the office or appointment for the grid impaired.

At the office or via vpn the unit would sync all of your pending documents and calendar events, via the network essentially you would be a walking server, and loaded to bear for all your meetings and scrums. Via the on board mic you could record all meetings and post them to the sharepoint server for later consumation by the lazier team members.

At lunch via the touch screen you could order lunch from the local / over croweded deli and bring it to the nearby man made corp park, where you could enjoy your delights while reading the latest how to please your man articles in vogue (subscription required).

On the way home and via a audio jack you could set the tablet up to transmit internet radio on 3g using pandora while real time traffic alerts slightly interrupt to give you audio suggestions home.

At Home the device could act as a super dooper remote control, with capabilities to set your dvr or even to view other channels via PIP. Not in the mood for T.V download one of the many titles from itunes/books and warm up to your favorite dean kootz via wifi. Of course right in the middle of the best chapter your mom will call but rerouting your iphone to the ring on the tablet you can take advantage of the onboard mic / video camera without digging in your backpack for the phone.

in conclusion, for xmas gifts this year the itablet wont be available so if your credit card is already out, i say the best bang for the buck will be the nook by barnes and nobel, if you can wait expect the apple solution to be out 3rd quarter 2010, but dont quote me on that.
